The highs and lows of Tour life

September 22, 2021

Last week’s PGA Europro Tour took place at Castletown Golf Links in the Isle of Man.

With Covid restrictions each player, along with PGA Euro Pro staff, required to have their second jab a minimum of two weeks prior to your travel date. Monday’s ferry crossing from Liverpool to Douglas was an interesting way to start the week. A spot in the Pro-Am on Tuesday served as my practice round prior to the tournament starting on Wednesday, have to say I was very impressed with the course, not to mention the spectacular setting with several holes running along Isle of Mans rugged coastline.

Greens team at Castletown Links showcased the golf course at it’s very best and deserve credit for the work they put in presenting the course in excellent condition.

For those of you who have followed my journey this season on the PGA Europro Tour, tournaments are played over three days with the cut coming after 36 holes [Wednesday & Thursday], final 18 holes on Friday.

Scoring on this year’s Tour has been exceptional and getting off to a fast start on Wednesday is a must, for once this was the case with my best opening round of the year. A clean scorecard of nine birdies and nine pars was just the start I was looking for although it was three shots shy of the lead and not even good enough for second place, didn’t I say the scoring was exceptional on this years Tour!

Very happy with my opening round, positive vibes going into the 2nd round. All was going well with the second round (three under) up until the seventeenth where I made a poor bogey, compounding the error on eighteen with a bad swing that resulted in a swim for my ball in the Irish sea and a double bogey finish. The first low of the week.

After my level par second round I now found myself down in 15th place a position, it transpired I’d need to hold to make the top sixty in the order of merit and a place in the Tour Championship, the final event of the season.

Unfortunately, the third round didn’t go to plan, and I found myself falling down the leaderboard. Every golfer experiences the ‘highs’ and the ‘lows’ and this week provided the lowest of lows, after the dust settled a top sixty place wasn’t to be finishing in the dreaded 61st place. Congratulations to this weeks winner Calum Fyfe with a barely believable score of twenty-four under par.

For the week my tournament stats by Par were:-

Par 3’s: Even / T57 Par 4’s : +2 T70 Par 5’s: -5 T39

Well, my first season on the PGA EuroPro Tour draws to a close, I must take the positives from an up and down season and look forward to next year’s 2022 Tour and continue to follow my dream in the world of professional golf.

Focus now turns back to Paul Lawrie’s 2021 Tartan tour, currently sitting 16th on this years Order of Merit, The St Andrews Classic takes place Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd at St Andrews over the New and Jubilee courses.

Time to focus on a positive finish to the season.

Thanks, as always for your interest and support, it is much appreciated.
Happy golfing,
Robbie
